My practice members commonly ask “can chiropractors adjust seniors?” The answer is a resounding YES! As a matter of fact, at the time of me writing this my oldest patient is 101 years old! The benefits of chiropractic care for elderly, for those 65 years and older, are the same as for our younger patients. We’ll talk about some of those benefits in today’s article.
Increased range of motion and mobility, decreased pain, greater health and vitality are just some of the benefits you can expect with chiropractic care! Who wouldn’t want more of that? As people get older they tend to lose mobility in the joints of their body. This results in poor posture, stiffness, pain and lack of independence. My goal when working with my senior patients is to keep them as active and independent as possible.
I also want to help people avoid what I have termed “nursing home posture”. We all know what that looks like. It is unfortunate that so many people in their golden years have let their posture deteriorate to the point where they can no longer stand and look upright without straining. This has to be addressed and prevented so people can maintain the lifestyle they want as they age. Staying active, getting adjustments and massages, and having a good diet all help to improve ones overall posture and health.
The adjustments I provide are always tailored to fit the practice member’s needs. Our techniques with elderly patients are very soft and gentle to ensure they are as comfortable as possible. I also provide non-force adjustments which are perfect for those that may be suffering from weakened bones or osteoporosis.
I mentioned the 101 year old patient member in the opening paragraph, do you know any seniors that receive chiropractic care? Perhaps someone that can beat the age of my 101 year old patient? Share your story below!
