It is about a 10 year old girl who came to see me. Her mother has been a long-time practice member and during one of her visits she mentioned to me that her daughter had been having daily, debilitating headaches. They seemed to come on from nowhere and nothing was helping her feel better. They had visited her primary care physician, an ear, eyes, nose, throat specialist and a neurologist. After many blood tests, CT scans and MRI’s, one of the doctors finally told the mother that they couldn’t find anything wrong so her daughter was just going to have to “live with the headaches”.
There is so much wrong with this. The doctors were so focused on finding something wrong, something to diagnose, that when they couldn’t they literally threw their hands in the air and said “we don’t know, live with it”! This is not meant to be medicine bashing at all, so please don’t get the wrong idea. I wouldn’t want to live in a society where we didn’t have access to the modern medicine that we have. But, it is a difference in philosophy. The human body is a self-healing organism and there should always be hope and a mindset that healing can take place. I see it so many times, as soon as hope disappears, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and this beautiful little girl would have had a lifetime of headaches, pain and multiple medications.
With all of the testing, prodding, and scanning of this young girl, no one thought to look at her spine! Hippocrates (460-370BC) said, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” This young girl had been playing a lot of softball and being that she is a right handed pitcher, her spine was not adapting to the stresses of the repetitive pitching motion. This lead to a subluxation in her neck that was irritating the nerves to her head. Could it really be that simple? The answer is YES! After 3 weeks and 6 adjustments she is headache free! I feel like many people are always looking for the complicated answer to things and we miss the most obvious answers because they are so simple. That is one of the many reasons why I love chiropractic… It’s simplicity. Stress to the spine causes subluxations which interfere with how the body works. Remove the interference and the body’s healing abilities are optimized. Simple!
Think of all of the time, money and stress that could be alleviated if every person was required to first see their Doctor of Chiropractic? If we were the portal of entry into the healthcare system our system would not be on this path to bankrupting the country. If a patient came to me with something beyond the scope of my practice, or if they were not suffering from spinal subluxations I would refer them to the proper Doctor immediately. But there are so many people taking needless drugs because they don’t know about chiropractic. Please tell your friends and family because when our loved ones are healthier they are happier. When our families are healthy our communities are healthy. When our communities are healthy our cities and states are healthy. Healthy states lead to a healthy country and healthy countries make a healthy, happy, peaceful world. That is my vision…
