Does Chiropractic Help Sciatica?

We have a lot of people visit our office and Sciatica happens to be the number one problem among our patients. So, you may be wondering… does chiropractic help Sciatica? The answer to your question is yes. Sciatica responds extremely well to chiropractic care. In this article we’ll discuss more about what Sciatica is and why chiropractic is such an effective treatment option.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the lumbar spine (lower back) all the way down the back of the leg and into the foot. It is the largest and longest nerve in the body.

There are many possible causes of sciatica. Arthritis, disc bulging or herniations, spinal stenosis, or even tight muscles can all cause this debilitating condition. There are many treatment options available for those who suffer from this condition, but as we have talked about before in past blog articles, the least invasive treatment methods should be tried first… and that is chiropractic!

Sciatica and Chiropractic

The first thing I do with sciatic patients is determine what is causing the pain. Is it a disc issue in the lower back, is it a degenerative change to the spine, or is it a tight butt (piriformis) muscle? Once we locate and determine the cause of your pain I’m able to design a treatment plan designed specifically to address the cause.

When it comes to treating sciatica, not only do we want to help you become pain free, but we want ensure it never comes back again. Our treatment plan usually consists of adjustments, massage therapy, specific stretches, and also strengthening of the core and postural muscles. With this treatment plan will create a long-term correction of the problem, not just a quick fix.
